Wilcox Performing Arts Center

Algona, IA

The Ed & Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona, Iowa, is a state-of-the-art, 26,000-square-foot facility showcasing MODUS’s expertise in designing engineering systems for cultural and educational spaces. Completed in the summer of 2017 in collaboration with StruXture Architects, this $7.2 million venue was constructed to meet the highest standards of functionality, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort while serving as a versatile space for performances and community events.

The project featured the integration of advanced HVAC systems, including TRANE hot water rooftop units (RTUs) operating at 480V/3ø. These systems were specifically designed to provide reliable and efficient climate control across large, densely populated areas, ensuring optimal comfort for performers, staff, and patrons. The electrical design incorporated an overcurrent protection system to safeguard the facility’s infrastructure while delivering robust power distribution to support high-demand systems, such as audiovisual equipment and lighting. In addition, MODUS designed and implemented a comprehensive sprinkler system to meet fire safety requirements and ensure the protection of occupants and assets. Additionally, a high-performance audiovisual system was engineered to meet the technical and acoustic demands of live performances, enhancing the overall experience for audiences.

The Performing Arts Center has become a cultural centerpiece for the Algona community, providing a flexible and inviting space for performances, concerts, and events. This project highlights MODUS’s ability to deliver innovative and dependable engineering solutions for performing arts facilities, prioritizing quality, sustainability, and user satisfaction.
